This course will give the student who is new to craft brewing an overview and hands on experience brewing beer and beer tasting, judging and appreciation. This series of six classes is being co-taught by Joe Eckerle, Brew Practitioners’ head brewer, and Mike Brooks, Smith Vocational collision repair teacher and experienced home brewer. Classes meet for two hours once per week for six weeks.
The first class will be an introduction to the course that will cover the basics of brewing beer at Smith Vocational High School, 80 Locust Street, Northampton. The next classes will take place at Brew Practitioners Brewery and Taproom, 36 Main Street, Florence. We will also conduct one partial class in downtown Northampton to learn about beer judging, tasting and sampling as well as one full class visiting local craft breweries to get another brewer and brewery perspective.
All equipment and materials will be supplied to the student.
Upon successful completion of the class, students will have assisted in brewing a batch of beer from preparation to bottling. Our final class will conclude with a keg tapping, tasting and celebration at Brew Practitioners. Students must be 21 years of age or older.
Time: Tuesdays, beginning February 7, 6:00 – 8:00 pm
Locations: Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School (first class) and Beer Practitioners (subsequent classes)
Cost: $240 for all six classes (plus $40 for materials payable to instructors)
